Does Vinegar Prep Aluminum For Paint

  • #one

Hey guys i need assist on a small-scale subject.I am painting my outboard and take all the cognition to paint it right from the people here.I am stuck even so on 1 small thing.I take heard some people use alumiprep and alodine.I have as well been told to use l/fifty water and vinegar before putting on the zc primer.I tin can't seem to discover any of the ii chemicals anywere here in my local area of port richey,fl.I accept hit hardware stores and a ton of marinas and even some paint stores with no luck.

Now doesn't the fifty/l water and vinegar do the aforementioned task equally the other 2 chemicals?Exercise i need those chemicals for my paint to stick or volition the water and vinegar exist enough? Also is there some other chemical like to the alumiprep and alodine i could use.Like i found a naval jelly that is fabricated specifically for aluminum in ace hardware, information technology says you can utilize that to clean the bare aluminum off earlier you lot paint. Will something like this work?I read the alumiprep is like an acid for cleaning then i would call back the naval jelly or water and vinegar would practise the same.

I only want to make sure the zc primer will stick as good as possible to the metal.Thank you for any help.

Re: preparing bare aluminum for paint

You are over thinking this one. Yep the vinegar is an acid and should be applied to the fresh blank aluminum every bit a wash. It will do a sufficient job if alodine or alumaprep is not avaialable but IMO that is where the replacement stops......... then ZC primer.

Re: preparing bare aluminum for pigment

So what your saying is that i don't accept to use the alumiprep or alodine to get the paint to stick better. And then if i apply the 50/l h2o and vinegar it will exist ok.Then the zc,and then pigment.I don't know were i would even become the alumiprep or alodine around hither.

[Someone told me at a marina today after i was washed sanding to use alcohol to make clean everything very expert and then use a 50/50 water and vinegar on the blank aluminum simply to help the zc stick better, then the zc,and so paint and you lot should never have a trouble with the paint coming off ever.Does this audio similar it's the right fashion for what i'm doing?]If yes then i will stick with that method.

Re: preparing blank aluminum for paint

Hi Guys:

This is what I've done with very good results, I hope information technology helps:

(i) Launder/degrease with detergent and warm h2o.
(2) Scuff up the practiced paint and remove any flaking or bad paint with sandpaper.
(iii) Wash again with detergent and blow dry out. I use a foliage blower as I don't accept compressed air!
(iv) Wash with fifty% white vinegar and h2o to compose the blank aluminum and blow dry.
(v) Shoot the bare metallic with a thin coat of ZC soon after drying to forestall further oxidation of the bare metallic.
(half dozen) Shoot with two coats Rustoleum. finished!

I do this on just about all the parts I repair or redo with very skillful results. I know at that place are other means merely they are more complicated, more than expensive and in my opinion more than trouble than I need for my uses. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Re: preparing blank aluminum for pigment

In my previous thread i asked about the alumiprep and the alodine and got no responses on it every bit to why i demand to use it and if any other chemical will do the flim-flam..That is why i did information technology seperate.A few people say it'south a must and i can't discover the stuff anywere. Then some people similar kilowatts say it will be ok the way he does information technology. So the answer to my question is similar 50/l and that makes me experience a niggling uneasy every bit i don't desire to put all this hard work and try for notta.I have never painted before and have already screwed it up once past putting way to much paint on.I volition go with what kilowatt said as i accept seen some of his work on you tube and it came out awesome.Jim has given me a ton of advice equally well as a few other people.I just don't want to screw this upwardly again so i want to make sure i have everything downwards to a tee.I recollect i finally got information technology though.I was just actually trying to find out why people use this alumiprep and alodine.I was trying to find out if it makes that much of a divergence.I don't recollect it'south the paint i'thou worried nearly information technology'south the preping for the blank aluminum i'g worried about more and so anything.Sorry equally i won't enquire about painting anymore.I know i sometimes go a little overboard.Information technology's better to me in my eyes to make sure i'k doing something every bit good as i tin practice it and i actually do capeesh all the assistance from everyone.I take always been this way with everything i do.I want it to be as perfect as possible then i don't have to practice information technology x times. And then i ask a ton of questions.

Re: preparing bare aluminum for paint

I put pics up in my other thread.I put them upwardly over in the other thread thinking i would become some answers on certain questions which i did.I am just curious about this alumiprep and alodine stuff of it's importance. If i don't need information technology and so that makes me experience a whole lot amend. But some people in the thread say it'due south a must so at that place must be some type of importance to information technology. This is why i'm trying to understand if the 50/50 water and vinegar is all i will need. What does the alumiprep and alodine practice. If they are just cleaners i would think a adept dose of alcohol would work first followed by a nice wipe down of l/50 water and vinegar on just the bare metal followed by the first coat of zc.That is the way i will approach information technology and hopefully information technology will work out for me.If not whats 1 more than fourth dimension correct.
